I'm Jenessa, a physician assistant passionate about empowering you in your health and helping you to connect with your higher purpose and local food systems along the way.
I journeyed into functional medicine after spending 5 years caring for critically ill patients with liver and kidney failure who required organ transplantation. After countless stories of heartbreak when a patient did not receive a life-saving organ transplant in time, I yearned to gain tools to help individuals take charge of their health before critical or chronic illness set in. This desire ultimately led me to study public health and to become a certified functional medicine practitioner.
I've understood the importance of lifestyle and environmental influences on health from a young age. I grew up on a dairy farm and experienced the privileges of frequent time in nature and fresh produce that I only now appreciate. Despite these benefits, I recognize the impacts of agricultural chemical exposure on health. Multiple close family members live with autoimmune conditions, and I am always learning how these and other toxic exposures impacted my own and my family members' health. I strive to help my patients mitigate the long-term risks of environmental, physical, and emotional stress that may predispose them to hormonal, autoimmune, and neurologic conditions.
I am also deeply passionate about improving soil health. Human health and our soils' health are interconnected! I encourage patients to support local farmers and to advocate for the implementation of soil conservation methods. A healthier food system will decrease our individual and collective burdens of chronic disease. In the future, Cultivate Health will host events on my family farm that connect us with our food, nature, and one another.
In my free time, I enjoy perusing farmers' markets, distance running, spending time with my parents, four siblings, their children, and lying in the grass after a hike.
I love meeting new patients and uncovering their path to healing. I'm looking forward to connecting with you!
